Seven roads across Rochdale will be closed this week for “urgent resurfacing”, or, as locals call it, a last-minute attempt to look busy before the budget runs out.
This information has been taken entirely, word-for-word, from the council’s Facebook page because, frankly, we can’t be bothered chasing roadworks stories. Any complaints about late notices, missing details, or sudden diversions should therefore be directed to the council, not us. We’re just the messenger, and a half-asleep one at that, our roads in Warrington where we’re based aren’t any better either so we support you Rochdale.
The closures will be carried out by contractor EST, which will be performing what’s technically known as “surface dressing” and colloquially known as “lob some gravel in it and leg it”.
Affected roads include Wardle Road, Sandy Lane, two different Manchester Roads (because that’s the sort of chaos we live with), Hollin Lane, Queensway, and Oldham Road. Diversions are in place, though most just lead you in a big circle back to where you started, only angrier.
The council claims this new coat of gravel will keep the roads “alive” for another 10–15 years, provided no one actually uses them. Residents remain unconvinced, with some suggesting the work is simply to rearrange potholes into a decorative pattern visible from space.
A week after the first closure, EST will return for a “follow-up treatment”, which many believe is code for “fixing whatever fell apart in the rain”.
Notices have been sent to residents, slapped on lampposts, and, in a bold new approach to community engagement, shouted through car windows at random junctions.
The council also helpfully linked to a three-minute YouTube video explaining how surface dressing works, just in case anyone wanted to watch a man pour tar and gravel in HD instead of EastEnders.
