Police baffled as man dressed as a clown tricks his way into pensioner’s home before stealing sentimental items and possibly dignity.
A 75-year-old Rochdale woman is recovering from the trauma of opening her front door to a Halloween trick-or-treater who turned out to be less ‘Pennywise’ and more Petty Theft Wise. Dressed as a clown, though police have yet to confirm whether it was ironic, tragic, or just his day job, the man reportedly asked for a drink before robbing her blind in what authorities have described as “a festive violation of basic human decency.”
The suspect, last seen fleeing Birch Road with a red purse and a wedding ring belonging to the woman’s late mother, is believed to be the only clown in Rochdale not currently employed by the borough council. The stolen ring holds deep sentimental value and, police say, was “possibly discarded”, presumably when he realised it had no resale value and might contain emotional consequences.
Detective Sergeant Ruth Thompson of GMP Rochdale spoke to reporters between sighs: “The victim has spent years helping the homeless and working with charities. So naturally, someone decided Halloween was the perfect night to repay her with mild trauma and light burglary.”
The suspect’s image, captured on a CCTV potato, has been released to the public, though police admit it looks more like a haunted barcode than a person. Authorities are asking anyone who recognises the clown outfit, or has ever seen a man with the audacity to rob a pensioner while dressed like a party shop nightmare, to get in touch.
Local residents expressed shock, with one neighbour telling us: “I saw him walking off and thought, ‘That’s a bold costume for a lad asking for Haribo.’ Now I’m wondering if I should’ve offered him a drink laced with regret.”
While the public are being urged to check bins, hedges, and ethically questionable pawn shops for the discarded ring, Rochdale’s clown community has also asked people to remember that “not all clowns are emotionally bankrupt thieves, some of us just honk horns and die inside.”
Anyone with information is encouraged to contact police via the usual methods, 101, Live Chat, or shouting “Oi, clown!” at suspicious individuals on their street.
