A Manchester-based private tutor has finally been jailed after a ten-year attempt to rewrite the national curriculum in “Advanced Horrors of Grooming” met with less than universal acclaim.
Umair Iqbal, 37, who had somehow managed to combine tutoring the Quran and maths with a secret sideline in institutional betrayal, was sentenced to 14 years at Manchester Crown Court this week. Legal analysts say this is roughly 13 years and 11 months longer than most women expected him to get.
Iqbal, whose full-time job was apparently “sexual predator masquerading as tutor”, operated in Middleton and Manchester, targeting girls as young as eight. Over a decade, he carried out 29 separate assaults against five girls and young women under the guise of algebraic enlightenment and religious instruction.
“An absolute sicko,” confirmed one local. “And not even the good kind of sicko who gets booted off ‘Love Island’ for being emotionally unavailable. Just your classic, predatory cretin.”
His conviction marks the end of a four-week trial that experts say “shouldn’t have taken four minutes”, had justice not been such an elusive concept north of the M25.
The court heard that Iqbal was able to carry out the abuse by ingratiating himself into family homes, hiding behind a patina of piety and a discount tuition rate. While most tutors simply disappoint with a lack of pedagogical flair, Iqbal’s offering came with lifelong trauma.
“He used a position of trust to ruin lives,” said DC Alex Dodd, while quietly wondering what fresh hell next week’s caseload might bring.
Rochdale’s safeguarding team, which presumably spends every Tuesday wondering why it isn’t allowed to carry flamethrowers, led the investigation under the impressively sinister-sounding “Operation Ganister.” Sources say it involved the usual cocktail of social workers, detectives, broken dreams, and at least one overworked housing officer called Carol.
The victims, all young Muslim girls, were reportedly silenced for years through a toxic mixture of shame, fear, and cultural pressure, which apparently now counts as a national pastime in certain bureaucratic circles.
In response to the verdict, Greater Manchester Police have encouraged others who may have been affected to come forward, quoting the operation name. They’ve also confirmed that no, they still can’t kick the door down first and ask questions later, despite how much Carol would really, really like to.
Supporters of justice, common decency, and not being an absolute monster are encouraged to report any information to police. Supporters of Iqbal, meanwhile, are advised to stop breathing.
